Meet our New Internal Verifier, Natalie!

We are very excited to welcome our new Internal Verifier Natalie to the Sweet* Team!


Natalie has been delivering the Sweet* Programme in Ysgol Syr Huw Owen and will be joining the team full time. Based in North Wales, she will be the lead contact for all delivery centres located across Gwynedd, Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham and Powys from September 2019.


Over the next weeks and months, you can expect to hear from Natalie who will be contacting schools to introduce herself and to arrange meetings.

Natalie says: “Having worked at Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen for 9 years, I am now ready for a new challenge. I have broad experience of delivering Sweet* in the classroom and am keen to support schools across North Wales in their delivery of the programme. I look forward to meeting and working with you all.”

This time of year is extremely busy for both schools and the Sweet* Team, with our focus turning towards signing off Year 11 learners and making sure you receive your certificates on time!

We have allocated a book delivery day of Friday 5 July. To guarantee your delivery before the end of the academic year, place your order no later than Friday 21 June.

There will be two separate questionnaires, one for deliverers and assessors, and both should take around 5 minutes to complete.

The long-awaited Entry Level 3 resource is now ready to be ordered! All orders placed will receive a 10% discount!

The resource contains a number of assignment briefs which support learners to achieve the BTEC Entry Level 3 in Personal and Social Development.

Who is this resource designed for?
The E3 resource has been designed for learners of a lower ability who are unable to access the Sweet* Level 1/2 resource. This is ideal for special schools, PRUs, alternative curriculum providers and mainstream schools who are seeking provision for ALN learners.


Delivering the E3 resource
The resource can be delivered as a standalone vocational subject. Learners have the option to progress to the Sweet* Level 1/2 if this is considered appropriate.



New Entry Level 3 resource now available!

Exciting developments have been taking place at Portal Training, and a BRAND NEW Sweet* Entry Level 3 resource is now available!

The resource has been designed specifically to support the delivery of important life and employability skills and the activities are suitable for learners who need additional support with their learning.

The resource focuses on six key areas:

  • Career Progression

  • Financial Capability

  • Rights and Responsibilities

  • Society in the UK

  • Sustainability

  • Working Well as a Team



Exciting updates to our Level 1 and 2 resources coming soon!

The Sweet* Team have been working hard to update our Level 1 and 2 resource to ensure that they support the delivery of Donaldson’s Successful Futures Curriculum.

The changes will reflect the Health and Well-being Area of Learning and Experience.

We’re adding a wealth of activities to support the delivery of important topics including:

  • LGBTQ+

  • Consent

  • Domestic violence

  • Maintaining positive mental health

Sweet* TeachMeet success

10th March 2019

The third Sweet* TeachMeet, held at Morriston Comprehensive school on Thursday 7th March was a great success.

A big thank you to Mike Hargreaves from Ysgol Cwm Brombil and Graziella Fiorillo from St. John Lloyd Catholic Comprehensive School who spoke about how Sweet* is successfully being delivered at their centres.

The Sweet* Awards will launch in next month 

The exciting Sweet* Awards being launched in April 2019. Last year, we had some fantastic entries and one learner at Penyrheol Comprehensive school won an iPad! 

There are some fantastic new categories and there will be some great prizes up for grabs for your school and learners. Keep your eyes peeled for more information soon. 




Sweet* Success in Quality Management Review 

We received our annual Quality Management Review visit from Pearson on 9 January 2019. This visit was carried out to ensure that we are carrying out high standards of quality management. 


In the report received last week, the Sweet* teaching and learning resource was described as ‘excellent’ and no actions were given! 

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all delivery centres and assessors for their feedback and co-operation over the past 12 months. Your engagement with our processes is greatly appreciated. ​


Enterprise workshop creates business soap-erstars of the future!

Students at Penyrheol Comprehensive School in Gorseinon enjoyed a fantastic day of enterprise, business and STEM activities as they worked together on the Enterprise Soapbox initiative recently.


35 students from Key Stages 3 and 4 worked together on the cross-curricular educational session where they had to plan, design, manufacture, package, promote and then pitch their own real soap product.


The activity was made possible due to two former pupils’ award-winning achievements in following the innovative Sweet* Personal and Social Development (PSD) Programme.


As part of the workshop, the learners had to use skills including communication, working to deadlines, working under pressure, creativity, leadership and organisation in order to complete the tasks. They particularly enjoyed the brand development and product design aspects of the process where they had fun being creative! Once they’d pitched their products, the winning team was selected by Internal Verifier Martin Griffiths based on their use of the 5Ps of marketing.


The practical and life skills which the students have learnt following the Sweet* Programme are designed to be used as they move forward with education and employment opportunities.

Swansea students to clean up with exciting soapbox initiative!

On Wednesday 16th January, students at Penyrheol Comprehensive School in Gorseinon will enjoy a fantastic day of enterprise, business and STEM activities as they work together on an Enterprise Soapbox initiative.


The activity has been made possible due to two former pupils’ award-winning achievements in following the innovative Sweet* Personal and Social Development (PSD) Programme of resources.

Sandy Saunders and Lee Rayner were awarded Most Outstanding Sweet* Student and an Achievement of Excellence, respectively.


“We are delighted to see the impact the Sweet* Programme is having on learners of all abilities from across Wales, as evidenced in the winning entries from both Sandy and Lee. We are pleased to be able to provide such an exciting educational opportunity to the students at Penyrheol Comprehensive School, to be able to put into practice the skills they’ve learnt.”

Enterprise Soapbox is a cross-curricular educational workshop for enterprise, business or STEM where students work together to imagine, plan, design, manufacture, package, promote and even pitch their own real soap product.

Students will have the opportunity to work with realistic business roles and aims, with the team becoming a business for the session and will need to work closely to produce their best results. As a business simulation, Enterprise Soapbox works so well because creativity, practicality, design, finance and leadership skills are all needed under time pressures. The session will put into practice the fantastic practical skills the students have learnt as part of the Sweet* BTEC Level 1 / 2 programme they’ve been following.

Sweet* TeachMeet a great success

The Sweet* Teach Meet held at our headquarters in Cardiff was a great morning, and fantastic opportunity for our centres to network. A big thank you to Fran Shopland from St Martin’s School and Greg Beasley from Abertillery Learning Community for their contributions to the session.

The event is free to attend and open to all, regardless of whether you are currently delivering Sweet* or not, and will allow you to learn more about how Sweet* is delivered in different settings.
